Area of contention!
Clutches are an area of great arguments on these cars. Sub 300hp, general use cars are likely to be best on the standard Toyota clutch (made by Aisin). The standard clutch is a single dry-plate clutch with an organic friction disc. The standard throwout bearing is NSK part number 60TKB3502 and the friction disc diameter is 236mm with a metal sprung hub.
If you check with Aisins catalogue it has this information:From that list you can see that the ST165 and early ST185 are the same clutch and the late ST185 and ST205 are the same clutch - the only difference is the pressure plate.
There is great disparity amongst aftermarket manufacturers who claim different spline diameters from Aisin and no differences in pressure plate. IMO this could contribute to the many failures of cheaper clutches that have good reputations on other makes and models of vehicles where this disparity does not exist.
Exedy have confirmed the clutch kit TYK2124 is their product for early and late ST185s and ST205s, and is therefore made to ST205 torque specification.
The clutch connects the engine to the gearbox and eventually the transfer box, the gearbox contains the front differential and the transfer box contains the centre differential.
You should always have your flywheel checked to see if it requires resurfacing before installation of a new clutch - not doing so could result in premature failure of the new clutch.
