The GT4 came with several different gearbox versions, depending on year and options. The 165 is known to come with two different ones, some early models had a non-viscous locker on the centre diff. These are very rare. The 185 had at least 3 versions of the gearbox and the 205 had only one. You can tell what gearbox your car came with originally by looking at the vin plate for one of the codes below. Also note the rear differential (axle) code which will be either 737 (open) or 767 (Torsen).
Here is all the info I can gather:
ST165
E50F1 Only fitted to 86-87 Japan spec models. No viscous coupling, locking centre diff.
E50F2 Fitted to all 87-89 models (post build number -0002274). Introduces viscous coupling. Available with 4.285 final drive (Japan) or 3.933 (export). Pressed steel clutch fork.
ST185
E150F Normal early ST185 gearbox. Identified by the cast steel clutch fork.
E151F RC gearbox. Improved dual cone synchros. Fitted with 3.933 final drive in all homologation models.
E152F I believe that this is the gearbox from the Japan only GT-Four Rally model. This has different ratios.
There is no known way to identify between them.
ST205
E154F Revised gearbox with different ratios for better accellaration. Dual cone synchros are used as per the RC gearbox. The fwd selector lever has been removed from the transfer. Easily identified by the lack of fwd selector lever (if you buy with transfer) and the small rubber vent below the shift fork.

RAV4 Box modification
It has been reported that the RAV4 gearbox will also fit the GT4 (all models) but I have yet to find out which model of RAV it comes off. It changes the final drive ratio and means a max top speed of ~120.
