An intercooler is simply a heat exchanging "radiator", and in all standard forms on these cars they are "TMIC"s - Top Mounted InterCooler.. They come in two forms - air-to-air (ATA) and water-to-air (WTA).
Air to Air (ATA)
In the ATA the intake air is cooled by the air scooped in from the bonnet vent and directed through the "radiator". The only car to come with an ATA cooler was the ST185 (non CS/RC). It is top mounted (sits on top of the engine) and gets heat-soaked fairly quickly, taking a minute or so at 50mph to cool back to normal temps and continue delivering full power - however its not as bad as many people make out. It can be fitted with a fan to aid cooling at low speeds.
Water to Air (WTA)
Uses water instead of air from the bonnet scoop, the water is cooled in a pre-rad in front of the main engine radiator. Much more efficient and takes longer to heat-soak, but then longer to cool again afterwards. The ST165 one is fairly poor but the ST185 CS/RC is known good to ~350bhp, and the ST205 one is better again.
Front Mounted Intercoolers (FMIC)
Many owners choose to replace the standard cooler with a front-mount when they start pushing the power above ~+40% approximately. Here is an example installation on a 205. Note the extra pipework routing and mods required.
